First Capitol: The birthplace of Wisconsin territorial government

Before there was the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison, the original capitol of the Wisconsin Territory stood near Belmont in southwestern Wisconsin. The site is open to the public today as First Capitol, a historic site owned and operated by the Wisconsin Historical Society. Read our feature story about First Capitol.
