Lawrence University Opera Presents “The Beggar’s Opera”
An English counter-response to Italian opera in the 18th century, John Gay’s “The Beggar’s Opera” challenges our ideas of criminal and governing factions, of love and necessity. This revolutionary opera employs familiar English ballads and songs and relies heavily on satirical devices, changing theater for the next two centuries and continuing to inspire writers into the 20th century. Each performance will include musical interludes by Holy Sheboygan!, a local band of Lawrence alumni.
