Artist statement
I started painting with watercolor in 1988. Along my journey to becoming an artist, I discovered that transparent watercolor allows me to capture both subtle and vibrant color through multiple washes applied to paper. As pigments are allowed to mix and mingle on the paper they are creating spontaneous dimension to my work. Using granulating pigments applied to either smooth or toothed paper, also help create interesting textural effects. I strive for transparency and luminosity in my paintings.
I have found that with my ideas, paints and brushes, I can recreate reality, life and emotion as I have felt it or envisioned it. While my subjects vary, I paint what interests me.
I find enjoyment in the challenge, the complexity and getting it right. The excitement comes from watching the colors mingle and flow as the painting comes to life. Watercolor behaves as nature- fresh, spontaneous, and elemental in its simplicity. Often, I find myself going with the flow of the paints and developing the painting with no preconceived idea or drawing. At other times I paint from a very detailed drawing, which is filled with detail and surprises for the viewer when they step in for a closer view.
As difficult as it is to part with a painting, I realize my painting will travel where it needs to go and be seen by those who need to see it.
I have exhibited in national, state and local juried shows. My art is in international, regional and local corporate and private collections. I am an active supporter of state, regional and local art organizations, including a signature member of the Wisconsin Watercolor Society and the Whitewater Arts Alliance.
