Artist statement
I work primarily in pastel on paper and oils on wood panels and canvas. My goal is to capture the rhythm and patterns I see in nature. I simplify the numerous values into three: light, middle and dark. I enjoy working from photos and sometimes on location, directly from nature.
The word "pastel" comes from the French word "pastiche," meaning "paste." Pure, powdered pigment is ground into paste with a small amount of gum binder and then rolled into sticks. Pastel has no liquid binder that may cause other media to darken, fade, yellow, crack or blister with time. Pastels from the 16th century are today as fresh as the day they were painted.
An artwork is created by stroking the sticks of dry pigment across an abrasive surface, embedding the color in the "tooth" of the paper. If the paper is completely covered with the pastel, the work is considered a pastel painting.
Historically, pastel can be traced back to the 16th century. Edgar Degas was the most prolific user of pastel. Mary Cassatt introduced pastel to her friends in the United States. In the spring of 1983, Sotheby Parke Bennet sold two Degas pastels at auction for more than $3,000,000 each. Both pastels were painted about 1880.
