Artist statement
I have had a passion for painting and the theater my whole life. As a scenic painter and a prop designer, I wanted to bring these art forms together on a smaller scale for my own personal work. I am also a "recycle-aholic." This is how my dimensional paintings began. I use sculpture techniques learned in prop building such as using recycled items, wire, fabric mache and paper clay to build up a surface on a wood canvas and then use acrylic gel and modeling paste to add details. The final layer is acrylic paint and varnish.
My subject matter has also taken a turn from my early work. Through my extensive exposure to kids and a four year gig painting sets and props for Sesame Street Live, my work has taken on a bit of cartoonish whimsy with themes that appeal to young people. Many birds and animals find their way into my work along with bright colors and organic swirls. Through my work and my teaching, my goal is to bring art into the lives of everyday people and give them a reason to love art as much as I do.
