Artist statement
My recent work contains a variety of media, from traditional painting to collage of found objects, and the form my work takes can range from representational to abstract. Each piece communicates something unique and acts as a type of encrypted bookmark for me as an artist.
Most people use a notebook or diary for keeping a journal of their thoughts and experiences. My journal comes in the form of drawings, paintings, collages and prints. The work that I create functions as a type for visual journal that allows me to record my thoughts, emotions and experiences so I can look back and reflect on defining areas in my past. The work is not only used to communicate with myself, but it is also used to share my experiences with others.
Through my work I can present the viewer with an image that illustrates a specific place or emotion. I may want the viewer to contemplate what it would be like to go skydiving or parasailing. Or, I may want the viewer to feel a sense of peace through a specific color or shape. These images are decided upon by impulse, from a person or place I have visited, or something that I would someday like to experience firsthand. Ultimately, it is these desires and experiences that drive me to create my work and share it with others.
