Curator of Exhibitions and Collections
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Miller Art Museum seeks a Curator of Exhibitions and Collections who is creative, thoughtful, enthusiastic and team-oriented. The ideal candidate will work cooperatively with museum leaders to imagine a new program of exhibitions and lead the future growth of the organization’s 1,000-plus piece permanent collection of Wisconsin art, 20th c. to present, organizing collection-based exhibitions, non-collection exhibitions, and exhibition-specific programs. This leader will develop and leverage deep connections in the local and regional art communities, both traditional and emerging, to expand the Miller Art Museum’s artist community and reach. This individual is responsible for research of the collection, recommends acquisitions, and coordinates the Museum’s collection planning, handles registrar responsibilities and oversees the development and execution of the exhibition schedule in keeping with the organization’s mission and core values. The ideal candidate will bring traditional museum experience along with a broad understanding of art, possess a curiosity to learn and a strong desire to innovate, building on the museum’s well-respected image through inventive exhibitions and creative community collaborations.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Coordinate all aspects of exhibition planning, including: set and schedule dates for exhibitions, schedule appropriate studio visits, communicate with exhibiting artists and select work for exhibitions, issue appropriate paperwork and artist contracts, prepare labels, install and de-install exhibits, and coordinate exhibit opening receptions;
2. Coordinate production of all exhibition materials (wall vinyl, postcards, posters, catalogs, brochures, signage, etc.) including: preparation of text and work with designers of exhibition materials as well as work with external vendors for printing and delivery of materials;
3. Maintain exhibition-related materials and ensure that appropriate museum staff (volunteers included) have access to accurate and current information;
4. Prepare and monitor the exhibition budget;
5. Supervise volunteer curatorial staff and intern(s) when required, providing an excellent example of professionalism, generosity and team building;
6. Manage the care of the Miller Art Museum’s permanent collection in alignment with the organization’s collections management policy and by exercising best practices;
7. Ensure current and accurate permanent collection records: oversee the cataloguing, photographing, numbering, identification labels, condition reporting and maintenance of artists’ biographical information;
8. Prepare documentation for donor receipts and permanent records;
9. Oversee the collection’s conservation and maintenance schedule and implement conservation and maintenance projects within budget as required;
10. Oversee the collection database in collaboration with museum staff and supervise data cleanup and revision as necessary;
