Voices of Rural Wisconsin Part Two: Rural Leadership
Tom Lyon - Cambridge
Silver-haired and tall, Tom Lyon looks the part of a chief executive officer. He was one, too, leading the Wisconsin-based agribusiness firm Cooperative Resources International for many years. The firm has played a pioneering role in animal genetics and achieved international status. Lyon served as president of the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents in the 1980s. Among many other positions of leadership at the state and national level, he served as co-chair of the Wisconsin Academy's Future of Farming and Rural Life in Wisconsin study. Lyon, who grew up on a farm in Tama County, Iowa, has thought long and hard about agriculture and rural life. Deeply committed to education and the opportunities it provides, he believes the future of our rural communities depends on strengthening our educational systems.
