The life and legacy of James Watrous
By Arthur Hove

James WatrousIn an article reprinted from the fall 2004 issue of Wisconsin Academy Review, Arthur Hove profiles a seminal figure in Wisconsin art, James Watrous. Frequently referred to as the "father of the Elvehjem Museum of Art" on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, Watrous was also an influential teacher of art history and muralist. The new gallery of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters, located in downtown Madison's Overture Center, takes it name from James Watrous.

Wisconsin Academy Review is published quarterly by the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters, an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1870. The Wisconsin Academy celebrates the state's thought and culture.
