Artist statement
Dan's choice medium is acrylic on canvas. His inspiration comes from an imaginary sense of freedom and danger. To accomplish this, he uses a variety of reference materials, including imaginative sketches and real life photos. When people are included, he uses live models that pose either on location or in simulated situations in his studio. Where landscapes are involved, he personally visits each scene several times before deciding on which parts of the scene to use. Dan often will combine different views of various scenes to create the final image. With added imagination and vision, Dan attempts to create a scene as he sees it happening, using reference materials only as a guide for accuracy. He begins by sketching the composition on paper the exact size of the finished painting. When he feels comfortable with the sketch, he transfers it to the canvas and begins the painting.
Biography
A Wisconsin native, Dan grew up in Sheboygan County and moved to Manitowoc County in 1987. Dan took an interest in art from his mother who, back in the 1940s and 1950s, was a commercial artist well known for her full color oil portraits that she painted from small black and white photos of that era. Dan excelled in art in high school and won many awards. Dan continued his education with the Washington School of Art; he graduated with honors in commercial art and architectural illustration followed by a 35-year career as a design/build contractor. Dan has designed numerous projects in construction, interior design, cabinetry, custom furniture and store fixtures. Many of his projects were featured in trade journals, national magazines and local newspapers. After his retirement in 2006, Dan began fine art painting, primarily as a hobby.
