Artist statement
In the past my images tended to be representative and focused on the landscape. Approximately five years ago, I shifted my emphasis to abstraction, specifically to the abstraction of human made objects (as opposed to abstracts in nature). My process of abstraction usually starts with my isolating a small portion of a larger structure, thereby taking it out of context and removing the familiar reference points. In a few cases I’ve changed the original orientation of the photograph. In others, I have increased the contrast of the image in the darkroom to give the final print a more “graphic” quality. Some of these photographs benefit from a combination of these techniques.
While this body of work reflects a shift in subject matter, my primary concern has always been with the interplay of light and shadow, shapes and repeating patterns in my images. My most recent images are more formalistic than those of the past. I believe my desired outcome is best achieved through the use of a monochromatic medium: black and white film exposed through a 4x5 view camera that is developed and printed in my traditional darkroom.
Biography
Bruce Warren is a fine art photographer who specializes in large format black and white photography. The subjects of his photographs vary widely, including landscapes, still life, architecture and abstracts. In 1974, Bruce became a serious amateur photographer. Upon completing his M.A. in Sociology from Washington State University in 1982, he moved to Eau Claire, Wis., where he lives with his wife, Margaret.
While teaching sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Bruce took photography classes at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Around 1988, he decided to "go pro," splitting his time between teaching sociology and doing photography. Since 1988, Bruce has exhibited his work extensively with other photographers and artists, and he has had a number of solo exhibitions. In 2000 he became a full time photographer.
Bruce served as the chair of the Visual Arts Committee at the Eau Claire Regional Arts Center from 2008 to 2012.
