Artist statement
I paint views of my outdoor environment I find to be singularly striking, intriguing or beautiful.
Working predominantly from life, and sometimes completing by memory, I use oil paints in a direct manner, wet-into-wet. In the open air I develop naturalistic images by progressing from areas of local color, light and shadow to the details of specific tree branches or reflections in water. I often connect with a particular place and delight to return and view it in the cast of a different season or day, responding to its changes with several paintings over the course of weeks or months. The finished works while not unduly polished are complete, balancing suggestion and description.
Through spending even a modest amount of time in the outdoors the very invisible qualities of God can be seen and understood from what He has made. My local landscapes explore in small-scale this beautiful and far-reaching truth.
