Artist statement
I am a perfectionist by nature, but painting in watercolor is teaching me to allow for imperfection. It is teaching me to value the experience, enjoying the process as much as (if not more than!) the finished product. Each painting is a challenge, presenting itself as a different set of problems to be solved. I am learning to accept that some mysteries cannot be solved.
I love seeing the subject as a play of light and shadows, shapes and relationships. I love watching the colors move together. I love working with layers of color and mask. I love not knowing what I’ll find when the mask comes off. I am learning to embrace the “happy accidents” that are inevitable and an integral part of the joy of watercolor. I’m hooked!
Biography
I grew up in Colorado, but have lived in Wisconsin for 30 years. I have only recently felt a strong pull to rediscover my creative self. A holiday gift of watercolor lessons opened the door, and subsequent workshops have broadened my horizons and added much joy to my life.
I have been strongly influenced by Peg Ginsberg, Birgit O’Connor, Linda Baker, Chris Beck and each member of the Madison Watercolor Society.
