Artist statement
I have been a printmaker for 40 years, and although I have worked in all the variations of printmaking, it is basic etching that I continue to focus on. It is the medium that seems to fall most naturally into my hands. I have a portfolio of over 95 etchings; they represent a wide range of interests. The subjects I have chosen for my artwork, which includes colored pencil drawings and acrylic paintings, have always been quite varied. I try to remain loosely structured in my approach to printmaking, because the technical skills required could easily overwhelm the spontaneity we all want to have in creating art.
Biography
Originally from central Wisconsin, Sally attended UW-Green Bay and UW-Milwaukee, where she received a B.F.A. and majored in printmaking. She has resided in the rural Hayward area for 34 years. From her small, efficient farmhouse studio comes a unique array of prints, drawings and paintings.
Sally is best known for her etchings, but also works in block prints, monoprints and monotypes. These original prints reflect a wide range of subjects, in an ever-evolving style. Etchings are hand printed by the artist on a Griffin Press in small editions, usually 25, plus artist’s proofs.
Another main focus in her art portfolio are her colored pencil drawings ... unique for their large size and detailed semi-realism. Her acrylic paintings feature bright, alternative hues and depict wandering roads and area landscapes. She has created a series of decorative palm tree paintings in mixed mediums.
Sally operated her own studio/gallery for 15 years. Her art has been exhibited in juried shows nationwide, and in group and solo shows in Wisconsin. In 2006, Sally was chosen to design and paint a cow for the Wisconsin CowParade. Her cow "Moon Over Madison" was displayed in front of the Overture Center. In a similar project in 2007, she completed two painted lions as part of the Lion King Extravaganza in Appleton. She has illustrated two books of poetry. In January of 2011, her etchings were featured in the article "The Fine Art of Skiing" in Cross Country Skier magazine.
She also enjoys making music ... playing guitar, piano, ukelele and several other instruments.
