Artist statement
Over time I have come to understand that my most effective and eloquent means of communication is through the arts. Working primarily in watercolor, colored pencil and graphite, I enjoy creating visual sanctuaries that offer the viewer a place of recognition, peace and refreshment. As a landscape and maritime artist, my work reflects a deep interest in exploring and capturing the kindred spirit and shared chutzpa of small-scale commercial fishing and Wisconsin farming communities--unique cultures that prevail against all odds in their beautiful but challenging settings.
Each piece reflects the convergence of a life filled with personal observations, experiences, thoughts and feelings. My goal is to push these influences beyond the narrow confines of my own story or even worse, the impersonal, to a more universal narrative of “knowing”--a dialogue not confined to time or space but to understanding. Undergirding this call as an artist is a personal faith and love of God as Creator and Sustainer.
