Artist statement
Born in the former Czechoslovakia (Czech Republic), Jaroslava Sobiskova came to the United States in 1986 to pursue her lifelong love of art free from the constraints of the communist state of the time. New to the country and eager to take in its many cultures and opportunities, Jarka explored Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and many of the great metropolises of this country, finally arriving in Wisconsin in the late 1980s to visit a friend.
Finding a quiet atmosphere conducive to study, with rolling hills, lush landscapes and forests reminding her of her home in Bohemia, Jarka decided to stay in Wisconsin and enrolled in the fine arts program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Painting being her main focus while at the University, Jarka's dedication and intensity won her many accolades and honors. Her studies being completed in the early 1990s, Jarka returned to her now free and rapidly changing home to paricipate in that country's renaissance. Working as art director for the Civic Forum Foundation was rewarding, but Jarka realized that her many years in the United States had changed her. Missing a culture that she had grown to love, Jarka returned to the U.S. after a year and began a fine art gallery in Chicago while simultaneously working for private clients doing mural and decorative paintings. Seven years and two children later, once again desiring a quieter life nearer nature, Jarka has again returned to Madison to pursue her art and raise her family.
