Artist statement
With an education in fine art, photography, digital arts and French studies, Cindy's work is synthesis of these disciplines. Her first artistic efforts were watercolor paintings. She appreciated the lightness and economy of the technique, although she did not always work in the usual wash manner, but often used a fine brush to work in precise detail. Most of her work at that time was influenced by surrealist artists and by her spiritual ideas.
After graduating with a degree in photography from Milwaukee Area Technical College, Cindy worked doing photo restoration: airbrushing away cracks, etc. on copy photos of very old, damaged photos. Along with photo retouching and restoration, at that time Cindy also learned the art of hand-coloring black and white photos that are archival, which will maintain their color and not fade as do conventional color prints. Now she uses this technique to convey a sense of sentimentality to certain photos. The focus of her art these days on the following subjects: Milwaukee, Lake Michigan, France and Women/Girls.
Currently Pawelski works part time as Outreach Coordinator for a Holocaust restitution taskforce using her French speaking skills to outreach to Holocaust survivors in French and English speaking countries. She also volunteers her time and creative skills for many activist and nonprofit groups in the Milwaukee area.
