Artist statement
Originally from, and currently residing in, Medford, Wis., Emma Klingbeil is busy giving her state recognition. At age 20, Emma moved to Nashville, Tenn., to experience something a bit different than harsh winters, pine trees and deer. In 2005, after two years of the South, Emma made her way back and decided to open a small gallery in her art-starved hometown, Medford.
Emma's work started out as traditional portraiture. As her interests moved more to pop and fashion art, she began her own jewelry/accessory line called "Hothead Crafts," re-constructed bright and wild pieces of functional art. Her appreciation of hip-hop started to lend itself to color changes, textures, anything and everything. Soon, the "Wisconsin Chroniklz" began. ""I just began to love everything flashy and poppy. Prince and the 'Some Kind of Wonderful' soundtrack started playing repeatedly in my shop. Everything became bright and sparkly..."
The Wisconsin Chroniklz began while Emma was helping her grandparents move out of their old farm house. She came upon old photos of past relatives from the 1920s. Emma began mixing her glittery-pop style and hip-hop lyrics with painting. "I'd begin to paint these people with black and silver...really simple, just to accentuate their facial expressions. Then I'd jam-pack in every kind of '80s pattern and color I could think of. I've always loved old National Geographic magazines and wanted to incorporate collage into the paintings...then I loaded it with sequins, glitter, unicorns, cars, whatever. I just wanted it to be an explosion of life and felicity, while somehow, by image or words, incorporate Wisconsin."
