Artist statement
My paintings are intimate explorations of the landscape, the "spiritual interferences" that surround actual places, and the kinds of light resonances these places inspire in me. I continue to explore light as both phenomenon and metaphor. I am interested in 19th and 20th century spirit photography of Europe and America, not as supernatural documents, but as curiously intriguing objects of the cultural desire for numinous, enigmatic experiences. I am also deeply influenced by the writings of Emerson, Muir and modern poetry.
"How do you approach nature directly? Look, between us that tree there is a space, an atmosphere, we agree."--Paul Cezanne
"When I saw an external object, my awareness that I was seeing it would remain between me and it, surrounding it with a thin spiritual border that prevented me from ever touching its substance directly."--Marcel Proust
