Artist statement
As a young boy in 1958, I had to wait until nightfall in order to make black and white prints in the darkness of my bedroom. To this day, the wonder of it all, the visualization and execution of the medium, continues to drive and direct me.
While my current efforts include adding to existing projects, I am venturing into a new area of the discipline--a series of Infra Red black and white images--capturing the seen and unseen in my environment, exploring how radiant energy literally glows from certain materials, both living and inanimate.
Biography
To quote the 1000 Friends Of Wisconsin publication, "In My Neighborhood: Celebrating Wisconsin Cities," "Henry H. Smith, photographer, instructor and lab wizard, relishes the urban experience offered by his native city, Milwaukee. Capturing the city as it re-invents itself is an ongoing personal assignment for him. His photography and Japanese calligraphy are exhibited primarily in southeastern Wisconsin."
My career in photography started in 1973, and as of 1982 I also became part of the teaching staff at Milwaukee Area Technical College.
Various works have merited awards from the United States Air Force, the Wisconsin Professional Photographers Association and Eastman Kodak.
