Artist statement
Trained as an architect, I was taught that the relationships between solid and void, figure and ground, light and shadow all have a profound impact on how we interact with the environment that surround us. This training affects how I view the world.
In my photographs I often incorporate architectural elements. They are an inevitable part of the world we live in, yet many times we take our surroundings for granted. I offer a personal perspective and reflect light on the details that often go overlooked as we go about our daily lives.
Scouting a potential image can take hours, days or even weeks, returning to the same place several times hoping for just the right lighting and composition. For me, this exploration is as important as the photograph itself. Using the ambient light and the shadows created by the buildings and structures, I try to coax out the color and detail only nature can provide.
Each image is a traditional chromogenic or C-type print and available in signed and numbered editions.
Biography
I began my photographic journey while in architecture school. I first picked up the camera as a tool to document buildings and projects for my classes. I eventually learned that photographs were much more than a simple documentary tool. Through the works of renowned photographers such as Eugène Atget and Margaret Bourke-White, I fell in love with photography as a powerful means of artistic expression.
My knowledge of architecture has given me a unique perspective on the world. I believe it is this experience that shapes the images I create.
I now reside in Grafton, Wis., and work for a large architecture firm in Milwaukee. Although I now make my living in architecture, my passion for photography is stronger than ever. I have no doubt that I will view the world through the lens of a camera for the rest of my life.
