Artist statement
My passion for photography was fueled by a class that I took during my graphic design studies in Milwaukee during the late 60s. Capturing a specific moment in time and seeing the image reveal itself in the darkroom hooked me.
A few years ago I switched from traditional film to state-of-the-art digital photography and recently switched from black and white infrared film to digital black and white infrared photography as well.
Most of my photographs are taken during early morning and evening hours to take advantage of the unique quality of light at these times. In recent years, I have focused on photographing the simple beauty of rural and urban landscapes in central Wisconsin.
I have also been doing Seasonal Studies of different scenes as I find it intriguing how the different seasons and time of day can change the look of the same scene.
Since beginning to work in the digital format in 2003, I have created panoramic landscapes from multiple images. The wider sweep of the panoramic accentuates the experience of the varied terrain and helps draw the viewer into the scene.
Infrared is not as sensitive to green light so foliage appears white with a glowing quality. Because of these attributes the images take on a slightly surreal look which I find appealing.
In 2004, the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau displayed my photographs as part of a two person exhibition titled Rural Wisconsin: A Photo Essay.
In 2009 my solo exhibition titled WIDE HORIZONS: Rural Wisconsin Landscapes was exhibited at the Steenbock Gallery of the Wisconsin Academy of Science Arts & Letters in Madison, Wisconsin.
Biography
Born Marshfield, Wis., 1 May 1950. Wunsch developed his interest in photography while taking a course as part of his graphic design curriculum at Milwaukee Area Technical College. Early on, his focus was on nature and wildlife subjects. After honing these traditional skills, he began experimenting with black and white infrared on a variety of subjects. An interest in auto racing led to a commitment to conquering the challenging techniques of capturing this fast-paced sport. Most recently, he has been working with digital panoramic photography. The panoramic format expands the possibilities of the composition in documenting rural and city scapes near his home. A fascination with the characteristics of traditional black and white infrared film remains. With its accentuated grain and slightly soft appearance, images that evoke an abstract surreal appearance are created.
