Artist statement
My sculptures are hand built, coil and slab construction, high-fire stoneware clay. Each sculpture is one-of-a-kind, and takes three to six months from start to finish. Earth tone stains and glazes--and an occasional touch of color--are added to emphasize and enhance the forms and textures.
I have worked in clay for over twenty-five years and was initially attracted to clay as a sculpture medium because of its wonderful plasticity and the endless creative possibilities it invites. As a keen observer of natural forms, colors, and textures, the medium has allowed me to recreate in various scales and abstractions, the beauty and history of the earth’s topography.
I also was attracted to high fired clay because of its permanence; I appreciate the fact that my work will outlive me and future generations.
