Artist statement
Being proud to say that I have spent most of my life in Madison and southern Wisconsin as an artist, I knew that painting interpretations of these surroundings (both urban and rural) is how the art, through time, would evolve. Primarily using my own photos has helped capture images and ideas to be translated into drawings and paintings. The style is what I will call "impressionistic realism" and the subject matter will often dictate how painterly or realistic the finished result will be, with light and color being major considerations for choosing each composition. My approach is to utilize a candid look at life with that which is more mundane (maybe off the beaten path) and if there is a story or a bit of levity within a painting, even better. Portraits, both drawn and painted, are another area that I find exciting. As long as it is challenging and fun, I'll keep grinding it out and trying to grow as an artist.
Biography
B.S. in art education, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1976. Commercial art, employed and freelance since then, doing illustration, props and design.
