Artist statement
I am fascinated by the painted surface, and the juxtaposition of color and texture. The content of my abstract, symbolic paintings plays a pivotal role in determining surface and composition. Transparent glazes, inscribed to reveal a shimmering underpainting, in a body of work informed by modalities of precipitation, allowed me to explore transparent color, patterns and inscribed marks. The play of reflective, transparent surface is sometimes juxtaposed with opaque textures, like water at the edge of an arid land. Frequently I build textured under-paintings, which are then layered and scumbled. The raised textures cast rhythmic shadow patterns, and allow the layered color more interaction, offering a glimpse into previous strata, like a physical history of the painting. These textured surfaces continue to be important in recent scroll-like paintings, including "Black Rain," "Cascade," and "Flowage."
Water is a constant in the ebb and flow of life, and is an important symbol in my work. The water cycle became a metaphor for tears shed with the rise and fall of civilizations, in a large piece commemorating the millennial "hoopla" experienced in recent years. Twenty-one small, square paintings comprise "Measures of the Millennium," each reflecting the character of a century. The center square of each painting has a distinct surface with a grid of one hundred marks symbolizing the rain/tears of a particular century. Inscriptions in the borders of each of painting in "Measures," chronicle human events of each century, denote corresponding dates from other calendar systems, and records population growth.
