Artist statement
The work shown here is all done in watercolor. Watercolor is a great medium for capturing light. I choose to paint when the light is strong, in order to capture intense highlights and deep shadows. I also find it interesting to paint objects that display some of the more interesting characteristics of light. Water, for example, is quite complex in the way it interacts with light. The same is true of silver and glass. Their qualities of reflection, refraction and transparency are fascinating. Even mundane objects interact in subtle ways with light. Solid objects become insubstantial when they are diffused with light. On paper, a shadow has just as much reality as the object that casts it because both are representations of the light on a 2-dimensional surface. To truly master light, a painter must focus on how light interacts with objects rather than on the objects themselves.
In addition to engaging the senses, I would hope that my work engages the mind and the spirit. I pursue ideas in my work. As a result, individual works can be grouped thematically. There are number of paintings from a series of Asian-themed works; there are also works from a series titled "Exploring the Geometry of the Sphere." It is quite possible that the roots a future series of works are also visible here.
